Beaches – Blogging from A to Z, A Write a Day

20130402-193215.jpg

This is a picture of the place that is legitimately one of my favorite places in the world, Saint Simons Island, GA. To be even more specific, it is a picture taken looking out towards the ocean from the stairway going onto the beach by Mallory Street, in the shadow of the site of Georgia’s oldest lighthouse. Just to the right of the stairs is a mosaic mermaid, and the sculpture of a right whale and her baby. A little further down is an ancient live oak tree, the Island library, and a kids playground.

One of my favorite insomnia cures is to imagine I am slipping out of the house we lived in then in the early morning, just when dawn is breaking, with our German Shepherd, who’s been gone a little over a year. She was still a puppy then, who loved running through the waves. We walk through the quiet Pier Village area, down by the pier to the beach. Then we come up those stairs in the picture and pause to allow her to shake off the water and give me a chance for an early morning dolphin sighting.

Looking out at how perfectly the sea and the sky came together, at the colors creeping in, at all the life on the beach, in the ocean….that is and was one of the most profound things that always, always made me aware that there is a God, even in those days when I was still searching for Him. Who else could bring it all together so perfectly?
