Slipping Through My Fingers – in a non-control freak way

I was getting my daughter out the door, and mentioned that people are going to be taken aback when we return to the States for a visit in December, and she asked me why. She has no idea how often the budding woman peeks out now from the child. It’s not all external either. The calm, serene woman that she is becoming is amazing, even when the little girl is momentarily in control. I understand now Meryl Streep’s wistful look in the video below. Here she is, helping her daughter get ready to be married, when it seems just yesterday she was going off to school in the morning. Where has the time gone? Who is this familiar-looking stranger? Se looks like the little girl I cuddled to sleep, but…she’s not anymore.

Slipping Through My Fingers

She will be with us awhile longer though. Her older brother leaves next week for America. No more dirty socks in the living room or suddenly empty soda bottles. No more lanky young man plopping down to discuss the merits of Matt Maher or demonstrating the chording for a newly learned song. Heaven help us, no guitar playing at all. The house already seems quieter and bigger. I’ll have to hear about his ups and downs after they happen.

And this is the part where I understand Meryl’s proud smile through tears. Because she knows that she has raised a good kid, who is equipped to go out in her own and take the world by storm. Isn’t that what all mothers are trying to do? Even though we are sad when we are successful? It’s really all that we can hope for, that we have given our kids a successful enough mental, emotional, and spiritual upbringing so that they do have the skills to stand on their own. So that, even though they are slipping through our fingers, they are slipping into the their own unique place in the world. Our caterpillars are beautiful butterflies now; it is the time to appreciate them, and not hinder their flight.
