Math, logic, and German

20120830-192608.jpg

This is a picture of my (American) daughter (fuzzy head in top-left corner) diligently working on her math homework. For her German school. She won’t let me help her with math, and for good reason. To this day, I maintain that my ‘C’ in College Algebra is more like an ‘A’ for Amazement that I actually finally passed the doggone course. Also, the native German is the husband.

Listening to them though, I am realizing that 1) math is not quite as much of a universal language as I had always thought and 2) that logic has more to do with math than I thought. And that Germany may be better at teaching math than the US. They show the logic of working problems, not the process, not just how to get the right answer. Something tells me the logic might stick with the student longer.
