Impulse for the Day: As for the seed that fell among the thorns

Saturday

24th Week of Ordinary Time

Gospel: Luke 8:4-15

As for the seed that fell among the thorns, they are the ones who have heard but as they go along, they are choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life. (Verse 14)

To suffocate on the pleasures in life!  That is a harsh way to put it, but it is clear.  Does it only apply to hedonists?   No, because we can all “go away”, distance ourselves from the word of God!  We live in great riches.  We “allow” ourselves many pleasures of life. Just considering the films and DVDs that we watch; when I hear my mother tell it, it was a big event in our village when a movie was shown in the community center every now and then.  Or look at our meals, when I watch one of the many cooking shows on TV, how much have our demands become so refined?  Daily, even hourly we are bombarded with so many offers for items or experiences that we can enjoy.  Who could possibly think of something as “old-fashioned” as the killing of the senses?

As for the seed that fell among the thorns, they are the ones who have heard but as they go along, they are choked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life. (Verse 14)

And yet we distance ourselves from Jesus if we don’t also develop a sense for this “killing”.  Entering deeper and deeper into this realm of all sorts of enjoyment will result in the death of our soul.  It is therefore better if we let the soul live and we kill more of our senses.  I know that in today’s world that this is very difficult.  The devil tries to convince us:  “fasting?”, “doing without?”; “You’ll never be able to do that!” “You’re way too weak for that.”  He wants us to think that this is an insurmountable problem.  This is a lie!  It is not as difficult as the devil would like us to believe.  Let’s beat him into retreat!  Get behind me, Satan!” (Mattew 16:23) I

As for the seed that fell among the thorns, they are the ones who have heard but as the go along, they are chocked by the anxieties and riches and pleasures of life.

Let’s become free of pleasure addiction that wants to suffocate God’s life in our soul!  Let’s find balance in everything.  Let’s eat those things that our body actually needs!  Every now and then it is good to celebrate, all in good time.  Let’s enjoy a good movie, but let’s also avoid sitting in front of the TV screen for hours every day. Let’s give our soul the room that it needs so that it does not suffocate.
