Impulse: If any want to be my followers

I really hate when the impulses remind me of the bulls-eye on my forehead!

Friday the 18th Week of Ordinary Time

Gospel Matthew 16:24-28

If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves (Verse 2)

Jesus warns us to deny ourselves.  Yesterday we saw how strong temptation worked in Peter: He feared suffering.  Self-denial is suffering.  The old self dies when we deny ourselves.  Naturally, we are all afraid of that.  Jesus to feared suffering in his agony in the garden of Gethsemane.  The ability to deny oneself is supernatural grace.   When Jesus invites us to this it means that he wants to present us with this grace.  It is ready for us to use.  We only have to open ourselves to receive it.

If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves

How can we do this?  We begin with small steps in faith.  When we believe that we will receive grace from Jesus, we can begin to let go of certain things that we would naturally want to keep.  That helps us to live outside of ourselves.  Not to circle around ourselves, but to live in the love of God.

If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves

In reading today’s Gospel, maybe some of us have become aware of our own sins.  If everything goes well, we are Jesus’ very best disciples.  We promise to give him our life.  But when we find that there is a price, when self-denial means there is a cost; we quickly say no and circle back to ourselves. Let’s not, however, let ourselves be disheartend by our sins.  Let’s start anew today!  We can go to Reconciliation. Jesus does not want to focus on yesterday.  Today is the day we can love him anew.  Let us live outside of ourselves.  Let us pay attention to the small things.  Let us serve our brothers and sisters through many small sacrifices that we freely give to them and to Jesus.

Have Fun with God

Then I decided to spend my time having fun because I felt that there was nothing better in all the earth than that a man should eat, drink, and be merry, with the hope that this happiness would stick with him in all the hard work that God gives to mankind everywhere.
